For the Bees

Summary

Khaled came from war-torn Yemen to Oakland, CA to pursue beekeeping and a better life. But with an increasing amount of uncertainties, life’s not always as sweet as honey.

  • Chloë Fitzmaurice (she/her) is a Bay Area filmmaker and creator of Docuvist: a website for people who love documentaries and want to find out more about the people and ideas behind them. Docuvist.com

As Yelp’s Video Creative Director, she directed “For the Bees” along with many other films. When she isn’t behind the camera, she enjoys climbing mountains, 3D collaging, and boogie boarding.

  • I frequently think about how often we interact with people but rarely get to hear any part of their stories: the grocery clerk, the bus driver, the movie theater ticket agent, the local business owner down the street. So often we overlook what's right in front of us. We walk into an establishment, look around, maybe buy something, and then leave; never really knowing the journey that went into making their venture a reality.

But Khaled's story is one that needs to be told, needs to be heard, and needs to be shared. Simply put, "For the Bees" is about a beekeeper and his honey shop in Oakland, CA but it's really about other things too-- about the things you would never know by just walking into his storefront on Telegraph Ave. and buying a jar of Yemeni honey.
